Riding with Feel - BOOK

!

Riding with Feel by Zoe Harrison

Riding with Feel is a practical guide for riders of all standards and all disciplines who want to improve their ability to communicate with their horse when riding on the flat and over jumps.

It is the only book to deal entirely with the subject of developing the rider's ability to feel.

Zoe Harrison leads the rider through a series of techniques and exercises, some mounted and some dismounted, to increase their awareness of their own body and to more clearly feel their horse's movements and response to the aids.

This book will also be useful for coaches and instructors in guiding their students of all levels and all ages in the development of feel.

Riding with Feel is illustrated with line drawings and covers topics such as rider position, body awareness, application and timing of the aids, fitting of saddlery and the horse's balance and movement. Exercises are clearly explained in the text and presented in summary form in each chapter to further assist the rider in their training sessions.

Schooling Horses In-hand - Book

!
Schooling Horses In-hand

For centuries horses have been trained in-hand in the classical schools. In this book, a master of the art demonstrates a training programme for riders and trainers showing how schooling from the ground builds trust, obedience and balance in the horse. He shows that in-hand work supports and complements work under saddle, and how it can assist riders striving to achieve higher-level movements in dressage.

For centuries horses have been trained in-hand within the classical schools of riding, yet today work in-hand is often forgotten. German trainer Richar Hinrichs, presents his training programme showing how schooling from the ground builds trust, obedience, and balance in the horse. He clearly demonstrates that in-hand work is an excellent way of supporting and complementing work under saddle and can be especially helpful for riders striving to achieve the higher-level movements for dressage competition. Richard Hinrichs demonstrates how the use of reins, whip, voice and body language can encourage voluntary co-operation from the horse and allow him to develop his balance and confidence without the added complications of a rider’s weight. The book is filled with clear explanations and numerous colour photos of the necessary equipment and techniques including for schooling in-hand; aids and their application; work on the lunge; the Spanish walk; pesade and capriole.

Author Notes: Richard Hinrichs was schooled as a young man by a member of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Today he trains, teaches and performs widely with his Lipizzaner and Andalusian horses demonstrating the fine art of classical horsemanship.

Showjumping for Fun & Glory - BOOK

!

Showjumping for Fun & Glory

This book provides training advice for the show jumping horse and rider, whether starting from scratch or wishing to compete at higher levels.

What a useful book! It really does cover every aspect of show jumping for the aspiring rider. It begins, very sensibly, at the beginning with choosing a suitable horse for show jumping and then progresses through the training of rider and horse, to preparing for advanced competitions.

And there is plenty of training to do. Each chapter covers a different area, such as related distances, jumping combinations, gymnastic gridwork and so on and flatwork is not forgotten either. When schooling at home, it is often difficult to think of different exercises to try, but the authors give plenty of suggestions, and explain why you should do them and how they benefit the horse.

There is also a section on competing; how to go about it, what to expect and of course, technique. The book continues with chapters on tack and managing show jumpers, and also the very useful “what if” chapter which deals with the inevitable and unexpected changes of plan.’  Horse & Rider

The Horse in Australia - BOOK

!

The Horse in Australia

From Phar Lap to Makybe Diva, Garryowen to Picasso, and Our Solo to Peppermint Grove, Australians adore their horses. Be it a pony club mount, an Australian Stock Horse descendant of the mighty Waler or a Snowy Mountains brumby, such is our love for the horse, we have virtually granted him honorary native status.

When the First Fleet arrived in 1788, they brought a collection of rough pony-sized horses purchased at South Africa's Cape of Good Hope. In 1810, the Colony's first official social gathering took the form of a three-day race meet in Sydney's Hyde Park. By 1813, hardy pack horses were part of the critical crossing of the Blue Mountains, and from the early 1800s, impressive breeding operations of Thoroughbred and Arabians were underway with imported blood horses such as Rockingham and Saladin.

The horse has remained fundamental to our sense of national identity. Despite urbanisation, we retain one of the world's highest rates of horse ownership. Through the stories of our most iconic horse events - such as the Melbourne Cup, the Golden Slipper, the Inter Dominion, the Garryowen Perpetual Trophy, the Warwick Gold Cup, the Tom Quilty Endurance Ride and the Pony Club movement in Australia - Fiona Carruthers captures how we have embraced the horse. This comprehensive, beautiful book rattles to the pounding of hooves, exploring the much-loved Australian Light Horse, the all-Australian sports of campdrafting, polocrosse, bush polo and picnic racing and the evolution of the Australian Stock Horse.

Every significant horsy name is covered, from John and Elizabeth Macarthur to Violet and William Murrell, the Roycroft family, Marjory and Edward Hirst and the indomitable Miss Kay Irving and her sisters. Banjo Paterson, General Sir Harry Chauvel, Bart Cummings, Gai Waterhouse, John Singleton, Sinclair Hill, Brian Hancock, RM Williams and Kerry Packer. Our contemporary stars across a range of disciplines discuss their dreams, their goals - and their favourite horses - including leading endurance rider Meg Wade, three-day-eventers Andrew Hoy, Megan Jones, Clayton Fredericks, show jumper Edwina Alexander, and the Atthow family, boasting five generations of campdrafters.

The Horse in Australia brings all aspects of a proud and vital Australian tradition under the one roof. Encyclopedic in the knowledge shared, it's told at a gallop and weighted with stunning images, making it the ideal gift for Australians of all generations.

Author Notes: Fiona Carruthers is a writer and journalist who has worked for News Limited, the ABC and most recently as a senior feature writer on the AFR magazine. She has loved and ridden horses all her life.

Tug of War: Classical versus Modern Dressage - BOOK

!
Tug of War: Classical versus Modern Dressage

German rider and veterinary surgeon Dr Gerd Heuschmann is known for his plain speaking regarding what he deems the incorrect and damaging training methods commonly employed by riders and trainers involved in dressage competition today.

Here, he presents an intelligent and thought-provoking exploration of both classical and 'modern' training methods against a practical backdrop of the horse's basic anatomy and physiology. He then outlines his ideal 'physiological education' of the horse: one where training and riding mirror the mental and physical development of the horse, fulfilling 'classical' requirements - such as regularity of the three basic gaits, suppleness, and acceptance of the bit - rather than disregarding time-tested values for quick fixes that could lead to the degradation of the horse's well-being. Dr Heuschmann's assertion that the true objectives of dressage schooling must never be eclipsed by simple 'mechanical perfection' is certain to inspire riders at all levels to examine their riding, their riding goals, and the techniques they employ while pursuing them.

Author Notes: DR GERD HEUSCHMANN trained as a Bereiter (master rider) in Germany before qualifying for veterinary study at Munich University. There he specialized in equine orthopaedics for two years before accepting a post as the head of the breeding department at the German FN, which he eventually left to start his own practice in Warendorf. Along with Klaus Balkenhol and other prominent figures in the dressage community, Dr Heuschmann is a founding member of 'Xenophon', an organization dedicated to 'fighting hard against serious mistakes in equestrian sport'

Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage - BOOK

!

Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage

A critical and revolutionary book about dressage and what it has become today.

Phillipe Karl, one of the most outspoken critics of the modern dressage world which aims purely at competing a horse as early as possible in well-paid high-level competitions, reveals some disturbing facts in this book.

The author analyses the physical, anatomical and mental condition of a horse with regard to official dressage guidelines issued by the German Equestrian Federation (FN). By comparing these with doctrines of such masters of classical riding as La Gueriniere or Baucher, he illustrates beliefs and mistakes and shows us solutions to the dire situation of modern competitive dressage.

  • Explores key problems of modern dressage: Physical aspects, straightness, balance, exercises
  • The hand, leg and seat.
  • Describes the effects of modern dressage, breeding and business.
  • Suggests a classical alternative: the philosophy of ‘legerity’.

Author Notes: Philippe Karl, a breeder and rider, is a respected and active participant of all areas of equine sport. For thirteen years, he was an active member of the Cadre Noir, the French elite riding school in Saumur. Philippe Karl lives in Southern France and teaches riding students all over Europe. His previous publications “Hohe Schule der Doppellonge” and “Reitkunst” have been translated into several languages and achieved international recognition. Phillipe Karl is also a talented artist, whose detailed and often satirical drawings complement this book.
